Humanity will continue until it doesn’t,
that isn’t the question.
The question is what are we and
what we will become.
We are, apparently, a society content
to watch the elderly die. There are a lot of problems
there; one is velocity. We can’t slow down,
even at the expense of dignity.
One resolution we could make is to be smaller.
People assume this means humility,
but there’s power in attuning solely to the task at hand.
One task is performing surgery. Another’s teaching.
There’s also raising children, making jokes, walking the dog –
and maybe someday you do none of this. And that’s what powers it.
There’s no Math to dignity, the way there is to horror.
Only the unknowable number steered to harbour
via the compass of your love.
